My super-inventive composer friend Frank Horvat had a fantastic idea when the COVID-19 pandemic had us all hunkered down at home. He wrote over 30 short compositions for solo instruments or voice and asked musicians everywhere to post a video of them playing his pieces. We even talked to Frank about the singer-songwriter pieces he wrote on Song Talk Radio.
I expressed interest in doing this if Frank would compose an easy piano piece. I was well aware how complex a piece he could write for piano, but I also wanted to participate. Frank composed two pieces for piano, one easy/intermediate, and one advanced.
I downloaded his mp3 and sheet music and practiced it a few times. I originally tried recording it to a steady tempo, but once I got a better feel for the piece, I felt my own interpretation would serve the piece better by playing it more freely.
I’m really glad Frank brought a little bit of light to an otherwise dark time for everyone, and so glad I took part.
