I heard about the awesome Kensington Unplugged series of shows where songwriters perform in the round, Nashville-style. One of my favourite artists, Alex Whorms was performing and I decided to attend that night with my camera in tow. I shared the photos I took with the artists and booked some of them on our songwriting podcast too!
For the first time, I tried out back button focussing on my camera. This technique takes some getting used to, as you need both your thumb and your finger to focus and shoot the photo, compared to only using your finger to do both with the main shutter button. One advantage is that once you set the focus with your thumb, you can shoot a bunch of photos in succession without the camera auto-focussing again and again with each photo. As long as you’re not moving, and your subject is not moving, this can work well. With my new Nikon Z5 camera, eye detection mode snaps the focus on the subject’s eyes for the best photos. (It doesn’t work as well when singers perform with their eyes closed!)
Some of the artists shared the photos on their own Instagram pages or websites and appreciated my efforts and talent.
